There’s been several reports of baby deaths due to the use of baby slings, in particular, Infantino slings. Many of the reports describe instances where the baby stops breathing while in the sling and have been unsuccessfully resuscitated. This is a horrible occurrence and although it has not been proven that it is because of the slings – it does seem to be a recurring coincidence and I thought people should know about it. Consumer Reports wrote an article describing the situation here. Below is a quote from that article:
We know of at least seven babies who have suffocated in baby slings over the past 11 years. The cause of other deaths in slings were undetermined or may have been misclassified as SIDS. Additionally, we have reports of 37 infants who have been seriously injured in incidents with slings over the same time period. Those injuries include skull fractures, broken bones, and serious bruises.
There’s even several customer reviews on Amazon.com complaining about the possibility of suffocation when using these products. If you are interested in more reports like these – you can subscribe to them at Consumer Reports. There is also a page on their site that goes in depth about all the products that they don’t recommend you buy or use. You can find that page here. These are just recommendations based on their (and their reader’s) experiences.
Maclaren Umbrella strollers have been recalled due to an unsafe hinge that’s on all their umbrella strollers. Apparently there’s been numerous reports of children placing their fingers in these hinges, resulting in finger amputations. Maclaren, in cooperation with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (which is the source of the RSS feed on this blog), is recalling all their strollers that were sold after 1999.
