Recently, there was a case reported by Westchester County, about a death of a four-year-old child, caused by a 32-inch tube television (the older, bulkier type of TV) when it fell off of a dresser. There were no charges filed (yet) but negligence could be assumed by the parents. This is a wake up call for all parents (including myself), that we need to take care of baby-proofing our homes and making sure large items and appliances, like TVs, can’t be tipped over easily.

There’s many ways to prevent this, and we’ll also offer a PDF link at the bottom of this post that will give you some more tips on how to prevent this type of accident from happening. But in regards to television sets (or any large item/appliance) – it’s extremely dangerous to be place them up high, where it could be knocked over and possibly harm your child. One idea to prevent this from happening is to utilize wall brackets for TVs – so that they can’t be moved or tipped over. There are also baby proofing cables and other similar products that will connect to your TV (or chair, stool, or any large item) to prevent it from falling down or moved. You should also make sure there are no cords accessible to children. They can be a strangulation hazard, as well as an electrical danger, but they can also be tugged and the TV could be yanked out of place or topple over.

It’s not easy to think of everything that a child might do or be interested in, so you just have to do your best when making your home safe. Consumer Reports’ Blog has a post that goes into more detail about the TV tipover dangers. You can read their post here.

Here’s an interesting video from the Consumer Reports blog post.

The PDF I mentioned is here. You can print it out too. I hope information and tips like these are helpful. Feel free to offer any suggestions in the comments or you can contact us here.

Cybex CallistoThere has been a recent recall on Cybex Strollers. Although we don’t sell this product line on this site, we feel it’s important to let the parents who purchased these products elsewhere, know about this important product recall.

What’s happening is that the stroller’s hinge is dangerous (fingertip amputation and cuts/laceration possibility) – mostly when the user is folding or unfolding the stroller. This is just like the Maclaren stroller recall. There has been a report of a child fracturing their finger due to this hinge.

The recall affects these models: Ruby, Onyx and Topax and they were sold between August 2009 and November 2009.

What should you do? According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled strollers and contact Regal Lager to receive a free hinge cover retrofit kit. Contact information below:

For additional information, contact the Company Service Center at (800) 593-5522 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or visit the firm’s Web site at www.regallager.com/recalls – consumers can also email the firm at info@regallager.com

The GoGo Kidz Travelmate was the smartest purchase we have made in a long time. What this fine product does is turn your car seat into convenient rolling luggage, and it doesn’t matter whether it’s a convertible car seat, infant car seat, or booster seat (although I think they might have a different model for the booster seat). We used it with the Britax Marathon convertible car seat (and you know how big those Britax convertible car seats can get) and we were never so thankful as we were while walking through 6 mile long airport terminals, on our way from Madison, WI. to San Diego, CA. for the holidays. It allows you to take your car seat (that I would’ve normally not taken because it’s such a hassle to lug around the airport) through the airport with ease. It works even better when your child is sitting in it – so it also turns your car seat into a temporary stroller (so you don’t need to bring that through the airport anymore, either)!

All you do is place the car seat on the back, thread the hard plastic strip through where the lapbelt would normally go, secure it to the other side by using it’s easy clipping mechanism (which is very easy to tighten and secure), and that’s it! Put your child in the car seat, and roll them through the airport with ease. The handle bar slides up and down just like your luggage handle does, so when it’s time to go into the airplane, you just disconnect the Travelmate and put it under your seat. It’s that easy. I’ll never travel without this product, ever again!

You can buy it through Amazon by clicking here. Trust me, you won’t regret it!

We have recently added customer reviews and ratings to most of our products at SeatsandStrollers.com – so now you can get opinions, descriptions, and actual user experiences from people that have actually bought the product!  Not only can you read other user reviews – but you can add your own!  These are moderated, to avoid spam – but we promise if it is an honest review (good or bad) – it will get added to the site usually within 24 hours.  I think this is a great feature and incredibly helpful when looking for a new car seat or stroller.  It’s one thing to hear from the manufacturer, what they think of the product (of course they are going to glorify everything) – but it’s another thing to hear from an actual parent – their experiences with a particular stroller and/or car seat.  Most of these are really descriptive, and go as far as telling you what car they used the car seat in, or how they used the stroller and how long it takes to setup.  I hope you will find these reviews as helpful as I do when looking to buy a product.  Also – if you have had any experiences with a particular car seat or stroller, please leave a review so other parents can benefit from your experience!  Feel free to leave feedback regarding this great new feature by contacting us here!
